A Finnish term used to describe the enigmatic power that enables individuals to push through unbearable challenges. Sisu is invoked by adversity and is about finding a kind of energy in the moment of need and represents a visceral and somatic dimension of human endurance instead of conscious willing or mental fortitude. Referred to as ‘embodied fortitude.’ Contrast with grit and mental toughness.
