Melancholy

GLOSSARY

A complex emotion with aspects of both pain and pleasure which draws on a range of emotions, including sadness, love, and longing – all of which are bound within a reflective, solitary state of mind. It is this special character of melancholy that makes it a more refined emotion and an emotion which engenders aesthetic experience. Considered an aesthetic emotion. Not the same as depression.
