The observation that the pleasures of success and the ignominy of failure abate with time. Used to generally describe how the emotions revert to ‘baseline’ levels even after following a pleasant or unpleasant event. Considered a ‘psychological immune system’ that helps individuals cope with, minimize, and eventually forget the upsets of life.
